Assam CM in National Committee of 150 th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

Dispur, March 31: Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi has been nominated as a member of the National Committee constituted by Government of India under the Chairpersonship of Prime Minister to celebrate the 150 th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda commencing from 12 th January, 2013.

The 1 st meeting of the National Committee is scheduled to be held under the Chairpersonship of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on May 20, 2010.

As part of the celebrations, the Government of India has chalked out various commemorative programmes over a period of four years from 2010-11 which will culminate in the anniversary year 2013-14.

Chief Minister issues instructions on road safety  

Dispur, March 30 : In view of increasing road accidents in the State, a high level meeting was held here today under the chairmanship of Shri Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister, Assam.

The meeting reviewed the alarming increase in number of road accidents and discussed about the steps needed to be taken to ensure road safety and to reduce road accidents.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the road accidents should be categorized into vehicle types, accident prone areas, time-frame etc., and that a thorough analysis of the causes of road accidents should be made. He reviewed the process of issues relating to driving licenses. In this context, the Commissioner of Transport informed that the process of driving licenses has been made stricter which include computerized testing of the applicants. The Chief Minister instructed that booklets to help preparation for the tests should be brought out, and provision of periodic checking of the licensees should be introduced. He reviewed the progress of computerization of the District Transport Offices and issue of Smart Card Driving Licenses. Shri Gogoi asked the Transport Department to complete the process of computerization of all DTO offices urgently. He also called for a special drive against driving under the influence of alcohol, rash driving and over speeding. The quantum of fines and penalties to be levied would be reviewed later.

The matter of adequate number of road signs came up for discussion. It was decided that more number of road signs would be put up particularly at flyovers, speed breakers etc. while the existing signs would be made more visible. The progress of setting up of traffic lights was also reviewed. The Chief Minister directed that installation of traffic lights in Guwahati should be completed by May 2010.

Among the steps proposed to be taken was provision of parking bays along the highways at intervals of around 50 kms. Wherever required, the practice of trucks being parked on the highways which cause congestion was to be stopped.

The spread of awareness on road safety was also discussed. The Chief Minister said that awareness campaign should be carried out beyond the Road Safety Week by regular screening of messages on electronic and print media. He also directed the Transport Department to take up with the Education Department to incorporate a chapter on road safety in the syllabus.

Chief Minister distributes vehicles to Inspector of Schools

Dispur, March 18: Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi today distributed vehicles to Inspector of Schools at a function at Assam Secretariat Complex here.

      Altogether 20 vehicles (Indica) were distributed which costs Rs. 72 lakh.

      Speaking at a function organized on the occasion by the State Education Department at the Chief Minister’s conference hall, Shri Gogoi said that a long felt-need of the School Inspectors has been fulfilled with the allocation of vehicles to them. He exhorted upon the School Inspectors to carry out regular inspection of the educational institutions which would help in improving the standard of education in the State.

      The Chief Minister said that his Government has all along laid emphasis on education without which no State or society can make progress. “Education is the catalyst for growth and development and it is by spreading the light of knowledge we can take our State along the high road to glory and prosperity.”

      Sri Gogoi said that his Government has given priority not only towards spreading education but also in imparting quality education. “Quality education is the need of the hour,” he added.

      Minister for Education, Shri Gautam Bora, urged the Inspector of Schools to conduct regular inspection of the schools and to send reports to the Government on time. “The vehicles provided to you will help your mobility, especially in the interior areas and to discharge your duties efficiently. This will, in turn, lead to improvement in the quality of education,” he said.

MoUs signed between Govt. of Assam and Tata Housing 

Dispur, March 9: Two MOUs were signed today between the Industries & Commerce Department, Government of Assam and Tata Housing Development Company Limited (THDCL) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and THDCL at the conference hall of the official residence of Chief Minister at Khanapara in the city.

      Commissioner & Secretary, Industries & Commerce, Government of Assam, Shri Ravi Capoor and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of THDCL, Shri Brotin Banerjee signed the MoU on creation of commercial spaces, IT parks, business hubs in the State.

      Chief Executive Officer of GMDA, Shri Pritam Saikia and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of THDCL, Shri Brotin Banerjee signed the MoU on building commercial properties in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode in the metropolitan area.

      The MoUs were signed in the presence of Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi, Chairman, Tata Sons Ltd, Shri Ratan Tata, Director, Tata Sons Ltd, Shri RK Krishna Kumar, Vice President, Business Development, Tata, Shri Sandeep Ahuja, Chief Secretary, Shri PC Sharma and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Shrimati TY Das.

      Later a luncheon was hosted in honour of the industrial bigwigs at the lawns of the official residence of the Chief Minister. Mementos were presented to the industrial tycoons by Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi.

Bhutan Consul General meets Assam Chief Minister & discusses issues of mutual interests 

Dispur, March 8: Bhutan Consul General in Kolkata, Shri Dasho Tsering Wangda met Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi at the latter’s official residence and discussed issues of mutual interests.

      Shri Wangda while conveying his greetings on behalf of His Majesty, the King of Bhutan and the Prime Minister to Shri Gogoi, said that Bhutan wants to strengthen further the relationship with its next door neighbour Assam. He said that the law and order situation has improved a lot with insurgency on the wane. “There is a great degree of stability in Assam. As a result thousands of Bhutanese come everyday for doing business in Assam especially in Chirang district. We want to foster our centuries-old relationship between the peoples of Bhutan and Assam. We want our next door neighbour to prosper and grow. Therein lies our prosperity too,” he said.

      The top Bhutanese official said that Bhutan would start flight operations with Assam on the Guwahati-Bhutan-Bangkok route subsequently to Patna.

      Shri Wangda said that being next door neighbour, Assam would benefit from any projects taken up in Bhutan, especially along the borders and Manas River. He requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with Government of India on repairing of the 40-km stretch of road from Samthebari near Dhalgaon in Assam to Bhutan. “The repairing of the road will enable Bhutan to move goods at a faster level by cutting down huge business losses,” he said. Shri Gogoi assured him that he would take up the matter with Government of India soon.

      The Bhutanese official told the Chief Minister about the 10,000 MW hydro electric coming up downstream the Manas River and said the project to be commissioned in 2020 would open up avenues for employment for people living on both sides. He disclosed that Bodos and Adivasis are being engaged in building electricity towers and installation of transmission lines.

      Shri Wangda said that he had come to Assam to have people to people contact and to explore the opportunities in which Bhutan can be a partner in progress.

      He informed the Chief Minister about his fruitful talks with senior officials of Government of Assam which would help him to convince his Government about the opportunities in which Bhutan can invest in a big way.

      Chief Minister Shri Gogoi while assuring Shri Wangda of all possible help and cooperation, said that Assam wants to strengthen further relationship with Bhutan. He said that Bhutan could send its students to Assam as it has the best institutes in the country. He also pointed out the State’s potential in sectors such as tourism and food processing. Shri Gogoi also spoke at length about the emerging medical sector and said that Bhutan could avail the medical facilities available not in Government hospitals but also private ones.

      The Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Shrimati T.Y. Das was also present during the discussions.
